Instability of dumped material required a solution for stabilisation and erosion control. This Quarry, located in Northern Queensland, is prone to high rainfall, which exacerbated erosion issues, necessitating a solution equipped to deal with high water levels and water flow velocity. Land rehabilitation needs were also being sought.
Vetiver was planted on contour lines to conserve soil moisture, stabilise soil, protect against erosion, and secure and trap loose surface materials (rocks and sediment). In conjunction with erosion control, the Vetiver was also being applied to regenerate the soil microbial activity.
The Vetiver design successfully stabilised and protected the old quarry site, including trapping sediments and rocks. Nine years after the Vetiver was planted, native trees returned to the site. The Vetiver had successfully acted as a nurse plant, creating a viable soil environment for native species.
